To RSVP online, click HERE or call 941-964-0060 and join BIPS at the picnic pavillion for CALUSA: THE LOST TRIBE! Who says learning history can’t be fun? Over five hundred years ago the Calusa Indians, a complex culture lived in the Charlotte Harbor area where we live today. They thrived on fishing, unlike others who mainly survived on agriculture, until they met their demise at the hand of invaders. This program includes an interpretive narrative on the Calusa culture including their customs and diet, as well as a demonstration on how shells were used as tools and palm fibers were used to make fishing nets. You will also get to paint Calusa-like masks out of palm husks to take home! Cost is only $5 cash per person at the program to help BIPS inspire, educate and preserve our natural and historic treasures. Visiting local author B. Shawn Clark will also be at the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse & Museum autographing his book 20/20, which can be purchased in the lighthouse museum gift shop after the program. The book features a man living in the future and reminiscent of his life as a boy who struggled to survive, with the help of a mysterious hermit and Amazon Princess Warrior, and the remnants of a lost tribe of indigenous peoples. All gift shop proceeds and museum donations directly support the preservation of the lighthouse. Note: $3 FL State Parks vehicle fee at the entrance of the park. The Port Boca Grande Lighthouse and Museum is free and donations are greatly appreciated.
