Art to Life: The Transforming Nature of Arts Therapy
Keynote Speaker: Angel C. Duncan, M.A., MFT, ATR, Director of Education/Clinician, Neuropsychiatric Research Center of Southwest Florida and the Executive Arts Director at Cognitive Dynamics
Scientists have discovered that Alzheimer’s disease normally spares, to a very large extent, the parts of the brain related to emotions, creativity and creative expression. While no drugs yet exist that can effectively prevent or cure Alzheimer’s disease, it is becoming increasingly evident that initiatives that help people with Alzheimer’s get involved in music, art and other creative activity obtain surprising results. And it’s not just about helping people with dementia – arts therapy is also about helping caregivers and individuals with other forms of cognitive impairment. In addition to education on arts therapy, this session will provide information on interactive applications and holistic measures for those with neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, stroke and traumatic brain injury. Don’t miss the special screening of Alive Inside, an uplifting cinematic exploration of music and the mind on Thursday, March 22, at 5pm in the auditorium!
