Impressionism in Art and Music Workshop with the Tesla Quartet
Monday, January 15, 2018 | 10:00am | Woman’s Club Room
General Admission $30
Impressionism in visual art and music both emerged in late 19th-century Paris as separate movements that seemingly did not really influence each other; however, a thorough look reveals certain parallels in technique and effects that contributed to these groundbreaking styles. During the Impressionism in Visual Art and Music workshop, the Tesla Quartet will touch on the key foundational elements of each style in order to illuminate the characteristics that set Impressionism apart from previous art forms. The workshop will begin with a brief overview of the predominant artistic and musical styles in mid-19th-century France before moving to an in-depth analysis of the different techniques the painters and composers used to create these new works that came to be called “Impressionist.” To aid in the discussion, members of the Tesla Quartet will perform short musical examples of the topics they discuss, and will include visual aids and examples of the artwork. The presentation will conclude with a performance from the string quartets of Debussy and Ravel.
