Robert W. Merry, longtime Washington, D.C., journalist, publishing executive, and author, covered national politics, the White House, and Congress for the Wall Street Journal for 12 years before moving to Congressional Quarterly, Inc., as a top executive, including a dozen years as CEO. After CQ was sold to The Economist of London in 2009, he served as editor of two prestigious opinion magazines, The National Interest and The American Conservative. He has written for numerous publications, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Weekly Standard, and National Review. He is the author of five books, including A Country of Vast Designs, which tells about how, in a one-term presidency, James K. Polk completed America’s “Manifest Destiny” conquest of the American continent by threatening England with war to acquire the U.S. Northwest and maneuvering America into a controversial and ultimately unpopular two-year war with Mexico, which brought in the American Southwest and California.
