Robert M. Citino We often call World War II “Hitler’s War,” but that is merely a literary convention. At his side, aiding and abetting him the entire time, were the professional experts of the German officer corps. By 1944-45, Germany was clearly defeated, facing superior enemies on all fronts and sitting by helplessly as its cities were being bombed into rubble. And yet the generals persisted, launching their men into one disastrous campaign after the other, battles that by their own admission they knew would fail. The endgame of World War II continues to raise key questions of military decision-making and ethics. Does the time-honored concept of “loyalty” only extend upward (ie, towards one’s superiors), or does the military commander also have a responsibility to the men under him, whose lives are in his hand?
