ADVANCED Oil Painting with Douglas David
Mon & Tues, March 12 & 13, 9:30am – 3:30pm
This is an incredible workshop for those who are ready for some advanced dialog and direction in their painting. The idea of this workshop while teaching you how to paint dynamic and exciting paintings is to get you to be very clear and very sure of the “concept” and the “focus” of the painting – simply a beautiful calm day on the lake, or a magnificent fresh-cut bouquet of peonies. The class will help you ensure that every effort you make is to acknowledge the “concept” and to be sure you do all you can to communicate that message through brush stroke and finish. The class includes interesting and memorable discussions on all the basic elements of painting including, composition, massing, building form, light and shadow, and depending on your own style, knowing when a work is finished (learning how to not overwork your painting). This is key and basic to all of Douglas’s teachings. But this class goes further as it revolves around discussions on the concept of a work, the continuing concept of a series and how these various pieces fit into the whole of your body of work. Great lectures to get you to think bigger about your work – past, present and future.
After the brief morning intro, a very hands-on approach to the class gets students organized and preparing to paint. Even as it is an advanced workshop and most students would have studied with Douglas or be familiar with his work, the basics Douglas feels important are still covered. Students will learn how to set up their palette with the basic colors and understand why this is helpful. Douglas will overview his palette and concepts that his work entails and do a subsequent demonstration painting throughout the next two days for each of the subjects that the class paints. There will be one subject each day, a landscape or seascape and a floral still life. The workshop will be taught from photographs Douglas supplies.
Students will work in their own style/technique so that the finished work is their own. Plan to bring notebook/sketchbook and enjoy all the demos along with some great stories to help you remember these principles that are the foundation of Douglas’ teaching.
