Book Discussion, first in a series of six book discussions planned for the season.
Land of Sunshine, State of Dreams by Gary R. Mormino
A hundred years ago, Florida was the 32nd most populated state. It had the fewest people of any southern state – slightly less than 1 million. As of 2022, its population is more than 22 million and only California and Texas have larger populations. Most of this growth came after 1950 when the population was 2.7 million. Mormino’s book discusses when and how Florida has grown. It “focuses on the diverse people who migrated here; the developers of tourism, beaches, shopping malls and gated communities; new technology (from air conditioning to the space age); and the impact of this growth and development upon the environment.”
Discussion Question: When did you first come to Florida and how has it changed?
