Calusa: The Lost Tribe
Tuesday, October 11, 2022Time 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM
From September 15 to October 15, we celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day. In Boca Grande, we focus on the Calusa. Over five hundred years ago, the Calusa Indians lived in the Charlotte Harbor area of SW Florida. While most Indian cultures in the area at the time thrived on agriculture, the Calusa’s main existence was based on fishing. This program makes learning history fun and includes an interpretive narrative on the Calusa Culture including their customs, what they ate, how they made shells into tools and used palm fibers to make fishing nets. Calusa are also very well known for their ceremonial masks, and you’ll create your own from palm husks to take home after the program. Space is limited and reservations are required.
