Zanzibar to Havana, Shanghai to Tangier, he’s hammered the keys in some funky places. Slammed a full tilt Boogie for lifers at San Quentin prison, conjured old Storyville melodies for crowned heads of Europe in Royal suites and serenaded Mayan Indians on the shores of Lake Atitlan. He played the blues with BB King and once even did the ’Tighten Up’ with Archie Bell and the Drells. From Barrooms, Brothels and shabeens to the Hollywood Bowl and The Albert Hall, Jon Cleary’s played ‘em all. Jon Cleary’s work pays obvious homage to the classic Crescent City keyboard repertoire created by such icons as Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Domino, Professor Longhair, Art Neville, Dr. John, and James Booker – while also using it as a launching pad for a style that incorporates such other diverse influences as ’70s soul and R&B, gospel music, funk, Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Cuban rhythms, and much more.
